In the wide spectrum of attitudes and behaviors that fulfill God’s commands to love your neighbor as yourself, justice is at the top of the list. Several times justice is equated with righteousness, lovingkindness and equity. And several times God commands doing justice. It is impossible to overstate the value God places on justice. It could be said, in fact, that doing justice is the overarching, composite, summary description of what it means to love your neighbor.

Despite God’s clear and frequent commands about doing justice, Jews and Christians make feeble efforts to integrate the principles of justice into their religious doctrines or daily lives. This is because they interpret justice as a corporate responsibility executed in the public sphere instead of religion — not as a personal responsibility practiced in relationships with their global neighbors. As a result, some religious groups reference justice in their doctrines and make efforts to pursue social justice on a broad scale for issues like human rights, poverty, homelessness, and hunger. And some religious individuals engage in volunteer and charitable activities that address a wide variety of social issues through political activism and the criminal justice system. While these efforts are commendable and achieve some good, they do not satisfy God’s expectations for doing justice as listed below in this page.

It is good that both religious and nonreligious people organize to overcome contemporary  justice issues because their efforts do make the world a little better. But progress is slow and new issues emerge as Christian Nationalists keep raising up new ways to oppress marginalized people. Not only do injustice, they also actively and aggressively militate against anyone who disagrees with them as being guilty of being “woke.” When investigate the motives of woke individuals and organizations, we find that they — not the Christian Nationalists — are the ones who try to make the world better by doing justice.

While there are some professional social activists doing good work to combat the organized, well-funded Christian Nationalism monolith, doing justice is at best an incidental, more-or-less religious pursuit for most Christians. Christians who do not identify as Christian Nationalists are the people who need to learn God’s commands about justice, apply those commands in their daily lives, and do whatever they can, wherever they can, whenever they can to expose the truth of God’s commands to Christian Nationalists who are actively working to spread hate — not love — in the world.

Unless someone challenges Christian Nationalists’ claims about loving God and obeying his commandments, they will not change their ways. Who knows, perhaps some will respond to these truths and turn from their wicked ways to do justice as God defines it.

Notes to readers about scriptures on this page:

  • See this link for a detailed discussion of injustice and oppression.
  • Scriptures below describe in detail what it means to do justice.
  • Doing justice is a key element of loving your neighbor.
  • 2 Timothy 3:16-17 says:  All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for instruction, for conviction, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 so that the man of God may be complete, fully equipped for every good work. See this link for understanding of good work. Doing justice for others is a good work.
  • Christians who say that they believe that the bible is God’s word to them, and that they believe every word in the bible, say, in effect, that they believe that this scripture and all other scriptures in the bible are true and apply to them personally. Therefore, people who believe this way should be able to find truth in each scripture on this page and apply that truth to their own lives.
  • Since the bible is a book of Symbols, Signs, Types, Parables, Allegories, Copies, and Shadows, the meanings of many scriptures are hidden in figurative language. But it is also true that the meanings of many scriptures may be understood in both literally and figuratively.
  • Scriptures that need interpretation to understand the figurative meanings are explained under each scripture.
  • Because most of the scriptures below may be easily understood in their literal sense, readers who believe that 2 Timothy 3:16-17 is true should be able to understand and apply the literal meanings of those scriptures to their personal lives. People who are not able to find truth and apply to themselves personally are either deceived about what they believe, or they are not looking at these scriptures carefully.
  • To the greatest degree possible, God’s commands should be obeyed without public recognition. That means that they should not be done in the context of public religious activity. In other words, obedience to God’s commands is purely a private matter — not a religious activity. Since religion is a public activity, obedience to God’s commands cannot be achieved through religion.
  • All of the references to justice listed on this page are “good works.” Good works include positive commands (i.e., things to do) and negative commands (i.e., things that should not be done.) See this link for understanding of good work.
  • All of these commands are possible for every person to obey because obedience is not dependent on social, economic, intellectual, physical or geographic conditions.

Micah 6:8

He has told you, O man, what is good; And what does the LORD require of you But to do justice, to love kindness, And to walk humbly with your God?
COMMENTARY: This is a useful summary of what God expects from his people. It is also a good summary of what it means to love your neighbor.

Isaiah 56:1

Thus says the LORD , “Preserve justice and do righteousness, For My salvation is about to come And My righteousness to be revealed.
INTERPRETATION: Doing justice is equated with righteousness. God’s salvation from injustice appears when righteous people do justice. In modern terms, doing justice may be equated with advancement of the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion movement.

Proverbs 21:3

To do righteousness and justice Is desired by the LORD more than sacrifice.
INTERPRETATION: See this link for understanding of sacrificial love.. Here God says he desires doing justice more than religion.

Jeremiah 22:3

‘Thus says the LORD , “Do justice and righteousness, and deliver the one who has been robbed from the power of his oppressor. Also do not mistreat or do violence to the stranger, the orphan, or the widow; and do not shed innocent blood in this place.
INTERPRETATION: The essence of doing justice is delivering oppressed people (etc. strangers, widows and orphans, etc.) from their oppressors who mistreat, and do violence to them. Shedding blood is a symbolic term for anything oppressors do to deplete or extinguish mental, emotional, physical and economic life.

Matthew 23:23

“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint and dill and cumin, and have neglected the weightier provisions of the Law: justice and mercy and faithfulness; but these are the things you should have done without neglecting the others.

INTERPRETATION: Scribes and Pharisees symbolically refer to religious leaders who are all hypocrites.

Christian Nationalists are religious leaders because they constantly advance their religion. Christian Nationalists publicly flaunt their religious credentials in many ways — including paying tithes to churches and donations to political parties and candidates. God gives them no credit for tithing. He says that doing justice, mercy and faithfulness are the most important things to do.

7 He stores up sound wisdom for the upright; [He is] a shield to those who walk in integrity, 8 Guarding the paths of justice, And He watches over the way of His godly ones.

9 Then you will discern righteousness, justice, And integrity, [and] every good path. 10 For wisdom will enter your heart, And knowledge will be delightful to your soul; 11 Discretion will watch over you, Understanding will guard you, 12 To rescue you from the way of evil, From a person who speaks perverse things; 13 [From] those who leave the paths of uprightness To walk in the ways of darkness; 14 Who delight in doing evil [And] rejoice in the perversity of evil; 15 Whose paths are crooked, And who are devious in their ways;

“Do not trust in deceptive words, saying, ‘This is the temple of the LORD , the temple of the LORD , the temple of the LORD .’
“For if you truly amend your ways and your deeds, if you truly practice justice between a man and his neighbor,
if you do not oppress the alien, the orphan, or the widow, and do not shed innocent blood in this place, nor walk after other gods to your own ruin,

Isaiah 1:10-17

Hear the word of the Lord, you rulers of Sodom; listen to the instruction of our God, you people of Gomorrah! 11“The multitude of your sacrifices— what are they to me?” says the Lord. “I have more than enough of burnt offerings, of rams and the fat of fattened animals; I have no pleasure in the blood of bulls and lambs and goats. 12When you come to appear before me, who has asked this of you, this trampling of my courts? 13Stop bringing meaningless offerings! Your incense is detestable to me. New Moons, Sabbaths and convocations—I cannot bear your worthless assemblies. 14Your New Moon feasts and your appointed festivals I hate with all my being. They have become a burden to me; I am weary of bearing them. 15When you spread out your hands in prayer, I hide my eyes from you; even when you offer many prayers, I am not listening. Your hands are full of blood! 16Wash and make yourselves clean. Take your evil deeds out of my sight; stop doing wrong. 17Learn to do right; seek justice. Defend the oppressed. Take up the cause of the fatherless; plead the case of the widow.

INTERPRETATION: This is addressed to religious leaders of all religions. God equates their religious kingdoms to Sodom and Gomorrah.
Words in bold refer to religion. The rest of the scripture reports how God feels about religion. Verse 17 reports what God wants instead of religion.

now, will not God bring about justice for His elect who cry to Him day and night, and will He delay long over them?

Luke 18:1-8

Now He was telling them a parable to show that at all times they ought to pray and not to lose heart,
saying, “In a certain city there was a judge who did not fear God and did not respect man.
“There was a widow in that city, and she kept coming to him, saying, ‘Give me legal protection from my opponent.’
“For a while he was unwilling ; but afterward he said to himself, ‘Even though I do not fear God nor respect man,
yet because this widow bothers me, I will give her legal protection, otherwise by continually coming she will wear me out.’ “
And the Lord said, “Hear what the unrighteous judge said;
now, will not God bring about justice for His elect who cry to Him day and night, and will He delay long over them?
“I tell you that He will bring about justice for them quickly. However, when the Son of Man comes, will He find faith on the earth?”
COMMENTARY: This has been a confusing story for Christians to interpret because it seems to elevate unbelievers to equality with believers. This is difficult because Christians cannot imagine unbelievers receiving praise from God for executing justice. What Christians and Jews do not understand is that unbelievers do have the capacity to execute justice even though they do not believe in God. See this link for understanding.
The interpretation challenge begins with understanding of what it means to be “unrighteous”.  Jews and Christians attribute righteousness to those who say they believe in God and obey religious laws. As is always the case, the understandings of religious people is very different from what God says. In the matter of righteousness, God attributes righteousness to people who obey God’s spiritual laws — not religious laws. So-called unbelievers who execute justice do so because they have God’s laws written on their hearts. Christians and Jews have read and heard the law but do not do the law. Unbelievers either have not heard or read religious laws, but whether they have or not is not the issue. What is important is that they have somehow heard God’s spiritual laws in their hearts and obeyed them. This is why God calls them righteous.
